Moxifloxacin is an active component of Vigamox. Bacterial conjunctivitis shows symptoms like acute irritation, redness and inflammation of conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the outer layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. It is caused by the organisms like staphylococci, streptococci, Chlamydia organism, and gonococci. These pathogens colonize on the ocular surface and shows symptoms. The Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic that acts to inhibit the action of topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is an essential enzyme that is responsible for the process of replication, transcription and repairing of bacterial DNA. Topoisomerase IV is an enzyme that plays a key role in the functioning of partition of the chromosomal DNA during the process of bacterial cell division.


This medication is a quinolone antibiotic used for eye infections. This drug is recommended to use as an ocular formulation. Vigamox is recommended to apply 3 times in a day for a week.


Use exactly as per recommendation for best results. Do not Stop the medication of eye drops too soon as it can result in a reversion of the infections. Before application of the eye drops wash your hand with water. Avoid the touch of the dropper tip of the eye drop with hands or other surface in order to avoid the contamination. Slant your head back side, stare upward and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. Instill the drops in the eye as per the prescription. Close your eyes slowly for 1 or 2 minutes. 


There is no known drug-drug interaction with Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution.


This drug is contraindicated if the patient is allergic or hypersensitive to the Moxifloxacin (fluroquinolone). Never instill the eye drop if you are wearing contact lens. Do not use any other eye drops while you are on the medication of Vigamox.


Store the eye drop in the refrigerator or at room temperature between 2 and 25 0C. Keep away from moisture and sunlight. Do not allow the freezing of eye drop. Discard the solution if it changes color, turns cloudy, or if it contains particles. Keep all the medicines away from the reach of the children and the pets.


This medication may be injurious and unsafe if swallowed. Contact your doctor at once if swallowing or overdose is suspected.


If a dose of eye drop is missed, use it as soon as you get remembered. Does not use the eye drops if it is the time for the next dose. Bounce the missed dose and continue with your usual schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Common side effects of Vigamox are unclear vision, watery eyes, dryness of eye, redness or itchiness in the eyes may occur. Generally this drug does not show any serious side effects. However this drug may show some allergic reactions like swelling of the eye, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, trouble breathing. This may require medical attention.

Some precautions that should be kept in mind are-

  • If the patient is allergic to quinolone then precautions should be taken.
  • It is a drug to be used ocular so never administered orally or parentrally.
  • It should not be used in eyes while wearing contact lenses.
  • Do not drive just after applying eye drops as it may cause blurred vision as a result of side effects.
